Malina Vintage NOLA Coral & Chalcedony Woven Bracelet

This bracelet is inspired by the story of my great-aunt Malina, whom I never met, but who I know would have loved wearing this. Malina moved to (and settled in) Rome, Italy when she was young to pursue a Fulbright scholarship to study Classical Greek and Latin, and her intrepid spirit and adventurous, courageous personality has encouraged me to continue in my own travels and pursuit of knowledge.

This bracelet carries the memory of the cool Mediterranean sea and salty breeze on a bright sunny day, against a clear blue sky.

The bracelet is crafted using a unique weaving technique, and features reclaimed vintage round white coral beads sourced in New Orleans, LA (Feb. 2023), paired with blue chalcedony rondelles and AAA natural light pink freshwater pearls, with brass and blue glass spacer beads. Finished with a 14k gold filled lobster clasp made in Italy, and a AAA natural ivory dancing Biwa freshwater pearl dangling accent.

My great-aunt Malina moved to Italy when she was young on an academic scholarship to study the Classics (Latin and Greek) and, falling in love with both the country and a man there, made a home for herself in Rome and never really looked back. Growing up, her name became familiar to me through the stories shared about her, and I feel a particular connection to this woman, my ancestor, even though we never met in this lifetime.

Her intrepid spirit and bravery to leave what’s familiar to discover something new and original for herself directly inspired me in my own decision to uproot my life to explore the world and travel to Europe (specifically Italy) in the summer of 2023. I made this bracelet a few months before my trip, and I felt it was Malina’s way of encouraging me to seek out my destiny and connect with my heritage.
